The Intention Engine
Mike Meginnis started up a blog over the holiday week, called The Intention Engine. He’s studying comics to write an honors thesis and a graphic novel, so he is going to blog his work. He’s already made a great start of it with posts on intention in the arts and a couple posts taking on McCloud’s Understanding Comics (which really is one of the places you have to start). I’m finding it very interesting so far, and look forward to more posts. Which has nothing to do with the fact that:
He wrote up a long post looking at my webomic, Maroon. I’m flattered by the attention and heartened to see that he got a lot of the subtlety in the strips. One thing I struggle with when making them is dancing about the line between too subtle and too obvious. I want the reader to have to pay attention, but I don’t want to make things so subtle that almost no one will get what I’m doing. It’s a tough line, and I know I’m not always successful on either side.
The attention Mike gave my comic is what I’d love to see more of, and by saying that, I know I should be one to start. More comics analysis! I’ll try.
