Spiegelman’s New Serialization

Welcome to Madinkbeard. If you enjoy this post you could subscribe to the RSS feed to receive upcoming posts or browse the archives to see past posts. I also create a twice weekly webcomic called Things Change: The Metamorphoses Comic

I downloaded a copy of Art Spiegelman’s “Portrait of the Artist as a Young…” (Virginia Quarterly Review 81.4 (Fall 2005): 12-25) from one of my library’s databases. If I understand correctly, it’s the beginning of a longer work in process about Spiegelman’s history with comics. It’s taller than the conventional American comics page; he uses an 8 square panel grid for almost every page. The story itself is so far not too interesting, what is, is the way he alters his style based on the time period in his life he’s discussing (he jumps around a lot chronologically). Some sections are more realistic and dark, others look a lot like an old comic strip.

If you’re curious, I’d recommend contacting your local library, they probably have it in one of their databases (the journal is covered in a number of popular ones). Sadly, there was not also a pdf of the fold out version of Spiegelman’s classic “Prisoner on a Hell Planet” (in the paper issue) which he discusses in the story.
