Spelling Mix
Something I’ve been working on for a few months is a less artistic use of the idea of constraint, in this case applied to the creation of a music mix (what do we call these things now, not mix tapes, and I’ve not burned a cd of it… mix playlist?). After the chance confluence of Television’s “Friction” and Patti Smith’s version of “Gloria”, the idea of songs with spelling in them became a topic between a friend and I while we were driving up to Boston. Since then with the assistance of various friends and acquaintances I’ve managed to collect an hours worth of spelling songs. Not all are great songs, but I found enough to at least cull out a few bad ones (okay, so I didn’t take out the Hall and Oates song, because it is just too funny). So far the actual order of songs has remained undecided. I prefer the “chance” aspect of a random playing mix.
