A sparse month for comics pre-orders (or my attempts at ordering fewer comics is paying off):

Curses by Kevin Huizenga (Drawn & Quarterly): A collection of Huizenga stories. Hell yes I’m buying this. I can’t wait. Bound to be one of the best books of the year.

Lucky by Gabrielle Bell (Drawn & Quarterly): I wasn’t thrilled by her previous collection, but her work in Mome and other anthologies has been interesting lately. Speaking of which…

Mome 6 (Fantagraphics): I was going to stop getting this as I’ve not been impressed by a very large percentage of the content. So, what does Fantagraphics do? They put a Lewis Trondheim story in the book! Now I have to get it, if only for that.

Phoenix 9 by Osamu Tezuka (Viz): Continuing this series, which I think should have 3 more volumes to go. Still haven’t read 7, but it’s on the shelf waiting.

Following Cerebus 10 (Aardvark-Vanaheim/Win-Mill): If the description is accurate this issue appears to actually focus on Cerebus again, looking at dreams in the series. I’m looking forward to this, maybe an excuse to reread some sections of Cerebus (there is so much to learn (visually) from it.

That’s it. I was tempted by Cinebook’s Lucky Luke translation (Lucky Luke versus Jesse James) as it’s one of those uber-popular Franco-Belgian bande dessinées that I should probably read at least one of. But I doubt I’ll really like it.

I also think this newest Mome has a story by Zak Sally unless I’m mistaken (my sister gets my sub since Fantagraphics doesn’t have gift subscriptions so I always have to drive over to her place an dpick it up). If they keep adding to the roster I’ll have to renew my subscription. I hadn’t been impressed in the beginning but it seems to be picking up steam. I like the idea of adding the Euro guys that maybe can’t carry a book- I hate to say it but Fantag. did try with the McConey books but didn’t seem to meet with much success- but can be used to add to the lustre of the series and force people to check it out.

I’d like to pick up Curse but I think I have all of Huizenga’s work in other places which I hate to admit because so far I’ve picked up everything he’s done (that I’ve found anyway) and it’s hard to find myself not getting this.

As far as the Fantagraphics “McConey” books (I hate the name change), those two are, in my opinion, two of the worst of the series. Alas. I think what really needs to be done with those is publish them in groups as Pantheon did Rabbi’s Cat and First Second is doing the Sardines books. The Lapinot books grow in value as one reads more of them.

Recently they published Huizenga for the firt time here, in Spain, and it’s been a great revelation. I love this guy and his concept of comic narrative, expanding the possibilities of the medium itself at the same time that he provides a philosophical point of view about everyday life.

And yes, Sfar and Trondheim are truly awesome.

I hope you’ll give Lucky Luke a try. This series is humorous, self-deprecating and often charming. As a translator for some of Cinebook’s other series, I have a vested interest in your response to the book, but aside from that . . . try it, you’ll like it! :-)
