Previews August 2007

Welcome to Madinkbeard. If you enjoy this post you could subscribe to the RSS feed to receive upcoming posts or browse the archives to see past posts. I also create a twice weekly webcomic called Things Change: The Metamorphoses Comic

A reader commented that they appreciated when I was briefly listing my picks from the Previews pre-order catalog. I stopped doing it because I didn’t think anyone cared. So, I’ll see if I can start that up again. From August 2007’s catalog (Oct/Nov release):

PictureBox (who have a new website worth browsing through) has a whole stable of releases (5) this time around and they all look worth getting:

Goddess of War 1 by Lauren Weinstein: I skipped her “Girl Stories” because I just didn’t want to read about high school. This one looks interesting with elements of mythology.

Maggots by Brian Chippendale: Whew, I pre-ordered this a few years ago when it was supposed to be published by the now defunct Highwater. A long wait. It’s small and densely packed I’m sure. Have you read Ninja yet?

New Engineering by Yuichi Yokoyama: There are a few pages of this in the latest Ganzfeld and it looks beautiful. Geometric, pastel-colored structures.

Powr Mastrs by C.F.: This just sounds like something I should check out. I’ve read a few short pieces of his in Kramer’s Ergot and the art is most unusual with pencil and watercolors, rulered lines that look not quite right in a kind of geometry class way. Weird stuff, but different.

Storeyville by Frank Santoro: A reprint of this long out of print comic. My review (it’s a rave).

365 Days: A Diary by Julie Doucet (Drawn & Quarterly): This book is a mix of journal, narrative, drawing, and collage. Sounds interesting.

Parade with Fireworks #2 by Michael Cavallaro (Image): I’ve been reading this online at Act-I-Vate. You can read some here. A story of pre-WWII Italy partially based on the author’s grandfather’s experiences.

Times of Botchan 4 (Fanfare/Ponent Mon): This singular manga series fascinates me. You can read my review of the first two volumes and a shorter post on the third volume.

Omega the Unknown by Jonathan Lethem, Faryl Dalrimple, and Paul Hornshmeier (Marvel): There was a lot of buzz on this about a year ago when it was announced. Lethem is a respected novelist and comics fan, who will probably either do something really innovative with this short lived superhero or do something completely nostalgic and dull. I’ll wait for the reviews and (if they are good) the collection (it’s a 12 issue series).

Betsy and Me by Jack Cole (Fantagraphics): I want to look at this one before I order it. Jack Cole (best known for the classic Plastic Man) is highly regarded as one of the great comic artists of the past. This is a collected edition of the domestic comic strip he was working on when he killed himself (about 6 months of strips I think).

Popeye Vol. 2 by E.C. Segar (Fantagraphics): The follow up to last fall’s first volume (which I have and still haven’t read!). You’ll know if you want this or not already.

Plus The Comics Journal.
