November 2006 Orders
Monday, more on panel transitions, for now…
November’s pre-orders for comics in the coming year (Jan/Feb 2007):
Ballad of the Salt Sea by Hugo Pratt (Heavy Metal): The first adventure of Corto Maltese back in print in English! I reviewed a different volume of the series (in French). I’ve gotten a lot of hits on that post since the announcement of this volume was made.
The End 1 by Anders Nilsen (Fantagraphics): Another Ignatz title, another hope of surprise, another chance to be disappointed.
Flash Gordon 7 by Alex Raymond (Checker): By all logic this should finish up Raymond’s run on the strip.
Miss Fury by Tarpe Mills (Pure Imagination): From 1941, a comic strip of one of the first female superhero comic strips and the first created by a woman (under her gender ambiguous middle name). A little piece of comics history reprinted. I sure with the publisher had a website.
Mr. Big by Matt and Carol Dembicki (Silent Devil/Little Foot): A collection of the mini-comic about animals in a pond. You can see samples on the creators’ site. I was going to order the minis but found out this volume was forthcoming.
A few things I’ll check out when they are published:
Confessions, Romances, Secrets & Temptations by John Benson (Fantagraphics): A follow-up to the comic collection Romance Without Tears (which I recently read but have not yet reviewed) this monograph looks at the comics publisher Archer St. John.
Oh Skin-Nay by Clare Briggs (DQ): A reprint from 1913 showing a “year in the life of small town America through the eyes of the twelve-year-old boy—woodgathering, sleigh rides, games of post-office, swimming holes and sandlot ballgames.”
To Terra Vol. 1 by Keiko Takemiya (Vertical): Another manga from Vertical, this time a seventies science fiction shojo manga. Probably worth reading, but also more likely to appear in a bookstore first.
Also unordered because I already own and love: Cold Heat 2 and Incanto from PictureBox. Both drawn by the incomparable Frank Santoro.
