May 2006 Orders

Welcome to Madinkbeard. If you enjoy this post you could subscribe to the RSS feed to receive upcoming posts or browse the archives to see past posts. I also create a twice weekly webcomic called Things Change: The Metamorphoses Comic

It’s that time of the month again for pre-ordering comics. Here’s what’s on my list for this month:

Kramer’s Ergot #6 (Buenaventura Press): This anthology is one of the cutting edges in comics, so it’s a must read. I’ve been about 50/50 for previous volumes as far as what I liked and didn’t. Looks to be lots of new names in this one.

Baobab #2 by Igort (Fantagraphics): I’m giving this title from the Ignatz series a second try. The first issue was pretty, but the story was lacking. We’ll see if it starts going better as it continues. Two other new Ignazt titles this month: Niger and Reflections. I’m passing on both for now, as I’ve not been very excited by most of the previous titles (except Ganges, of course).

The Comics Journal #277 (Fantagraphics): I let my mail subscription lapse (too slow!) so I’ll be pre-ordering it instead. There’s always something interesting in TCJ. Lately, each issue includes a section of reprints from some old creator or comic that are a highlight.

Left Bank Gang by Jason (Fantagraphics): I already love Jason’s work and this short graphic novel has a premis that can’t be missed: the swinging Paris of 20’s where Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, and company are cartoonists instead of novelists.

Finder Vol. 8 “Five Crazy Women” by Carla Speed McNeil (Lightspeed): I haven’t read all of Finder yet, but I’ve read enough to know how excellent it is. Plus the graphic novels always have a great amount of textual annotations in the back.

The First Kingdom Vol. 4 by Jack Katz (Century): This will wrap up the series. I can’t imagine how (maybe apocalypse?).

A rather brief list, but it should all be great (Baobab is my only risk this month).

Other things I had my eye on, but am waiting on more information: A second volume of Carl Barks’ duck stories from Gemstone (I want to read volume 1 first) and the Little Lulu Color Special (I’m going to try a volume of that series at some point).
