Exercise in Style: Recipe
As I am putting up a brief review of Queneau’s Exercises in Style soon, I decided to (presumptiously) write my own using Queneau’s story as an example for the unfamiliar reader. Thus, I hearby humbly submit:
“Recipe”
1 young man with long neck
1 hat with encircling cord
1 older man, who steps on toes when possible
liberal amounts of jostling
1 empty seat
1 observer
bus riders to taste
At rush hour on a summer’s day, mix all ingredients in a public bus. If done correctly the older man will trod upon the younger’s feet, and the younger man will point out such angrily before sitting down in the empty seat.
Let sit two hours, then mix, in a gare Saint-Lazare pan:
1 young man with long neck (baked in his overcoat)
1 friend
sartorial advice
1 button, placed too low
1 observer (use the same as above)
Place the first mixture previous to the second. Enjoy.
