December 2007 Pre-Orders
I’ve been meaning to get back posting what I’m interested in or pre-ordering every month, my preliminary recommendation list:
Phoenix 12 by Osamu Tezuka (Viz): The final volume to be published by Viz, though the series proper ended in volume 11. If I understand correctly this features stories Tezuka did previous to the first Phoenix volume. I’ll be curious to see what this is. More by me on Phoenix.
The Education of Hopey Glass by Jaime Hernandez (Fantagraphics): I’m assuming this is the follow-up to Ghost of Hoppers, collecting stories from Love and Rockets Volume 2. Whatever it is, Jaime is my preferred Hernandez brother, and I always like getting a book of just his work.
Hall of Best Knowledge by Ray Fenwick (Fantagraphics): Fenwick’s text and design heavy work has been appearing in Mome recently. You can see previews of this book at Fenwick’s Flickr site.
Goddess of War 1 (of 4) by Lauren Weinstein (Picturebox): Picturebox generally gets the benefit of the doubt, and I’ve heard good things about Weinstein’s Girl Stories, though the subject itself has kept me from reading it.
Complete Little Orphan Annie Volume 1 by Harold Gray (IDW): I’m excited about these collected Annie books, but I’m reluctant to buy this first one. I don’t believe Gray really hit his stride until a little further along. In general the first volumes of most of these series are disappointing. My long post on Annie.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #11 by Joss Whedon and other folks (Dark Horse): I’m still following this, and it’s definitely getting better as time goes on. The pacing still feels off a bit in the translation from tv episodes to comic issues. Maybe I should just wait for the trades. My brief post on the first issue.
