August 2006 Orders
First off, a reminder: Things Change episodes go up every Sunday and Wednesday. At this point it looks like I’ll be keeping a Monday/Friday schedule here at the blog. I’m putting a lot of time into the comic, so less time will be put into the reviews.
Pre-orders for the future (November? I can never keep track of the months):
Daybreak by Tom Devlin and Brian Ralph (Bodega): I’ve been reading this over on the New Bodega blog. A strange comic drawn with a first person view. The characters talk at the reader as if they were another character in the scene. Should be interesting on at least an experimental level. There are two other books out from Bodega in the catalog, so it looks like a new publishing venture, perhaps the new Highwater? (No website information so far, but Bodega is where Devlin’s Highwater stock went when he closed shop).
Ice Wanderer by Jiro Taniguchi (Fanfare/Ponent Mon): Another by Taniguchi of Walking Man and Botchan fame. I don’t even care what it’s about, I love his work.
Complete Peanuts 1961-1962 by Charles Schulz (Fantagraphics): I can’t stop reading these. I am so much more entertained by old Peanuts strips than I thought I would be. I particularly like getting them in large chunks. When I started reading these, I really thought I’d get bored with them, as I never really caught on with Peanuts in the paper when I was a kid.
Premillennial Maakies: First Five Years by Tony Millionaire (Fantagraphics): Five years of Maakies strips should be an interesting read. Millionaire’s drawing is wonderful stuff. The stories are occasionally a little too “gross out” for me, but it’s also quite funny on a consistent basis.
Acme Novelty Library 17 by Chris Ware (Drawn and Quarterly): Continuation of Rusty Brown and Building Stories. Last volume was excellent formally. I still find Ware often overbearingly negative and depressing, but I want to see where he goes next.
A few other things of possible interest but not pre-ordered:
IDW’s first volume of Dick Tracy reprints: A notable release but I have some Tracy reprints and I just can’t build up any excitement for the story or the art.
Checker’s book of McCay’s Rarebit Fiends Saturday strips: I like the strips but Checker’s reprints have been hit or miss with quality. The Flash Gordon volumes are pretty good (if only they’d continue publishing them), but the Steve Canyon reprints are atrociously tiny.
Let us Be Perfectly Clear by Paul Hornschemeier (Fantagraphics) which I want to see/hear more about first. Hornschemeier interests me, but I haven’t so far warmed to his work.
