Andy’s Early Comic Archive
Part of the Bugpowder site, Andy’s Early Comic Archive is a great collection of images dating from 300 to the early 20th century. Includes such historical predecessors as the Bayeaux Tapestry, as well as Topffer, and a slew of early illustrators. Best of the all, the page linked above includes samples from Herriman, Gross, John Held Jr., Frank King, Masereel, Segar, and a number of Sterrett’s Polly strips. While all the entries aren’t particularly extensive, it is a great collection with some historical comic strip evolutionary context.
