A.L.I.E.E.E.N.

Welcome to Madinkbeard. If you enjoy this post you could subscribe to the RSS feed to receive upcoming posts or browse the archives to see past posts. I also create a twice weekly webcomic called Things Change: The Metamorphoses Comic

A.L.I.E.E.E.N. by Lewis Trondheim. First Second, 2006.

This is the only book I’ve seen from First Second’s launch so far, and I find myself unable to formulate any real opinion on it. Trondheim is one of my favorite cartoonists, but I’ve so far avoided reading any of his works for children. While there is some debate about whether this is really a comic for kids, I think it points in that direction, which is probably why I am so ambivalent.

The art is different than the Trondheim works I am familiar with. It has a more volumetric look to it, vaguely animated (I can easily see this book as a cartoon). The colors have a pseudo aged look which is quite enjoyable (I imagine reading old Kirby reprints with a similar coloring rather than the too slick recoloring Marvel does).

I really don’t know what to say about it, so I direct you to Chris Butcher’s review which does an excellent job in explaining the book (and really explains my ambivalence on the matter, it just isn’t meant for me).
