All PostsI found this Louise Bourgeois drawing from 1944 in “Drawing from the Modern: 1880-1945″ (Museum of Modern Art, 2004):
Something about it appeals to me. The repeated lines are likes waves, the ocean, sound, an ekg, abstract mountains, or a topographic map. The peaks travel across the page, down and to the right in a staggered motion, leading the eye through the composition either from the white space or into the white space (depending on where you start). The lines are scratchy, dynamic, interesting. This looks like the beginning of something, a story, a sequence, a picture book. I don’t know. It’s expansive.

That´s an interesting picture; not really beautiful, but interesting.
Also, if you invert the colors it looks like early Nabiel Kanan…
The linework just looks awkward to me. But still an interesting image, yes. If you like this sort of thing, you might check out the paintings of James Siena. I suspect his work may be found in third Drawing From the Modern volume.
It looks to me like a Saul Steinberg, actually.
Arthur: I didn’t even realize there were two more volumes! They weren’t shelved together so I missed them. Thanks for the tip.
And like a Paul Klee, who was probably Steinberg’s main influence.
