Actually, I should have remembered this: the star system was Tezuka’s concept about his own characters. No one else came up with it.

You mentioned about Tezuka’s “star system”, I knew I’ve read about it, but can’t recall who’s the first to name it ‘star system’. May I get the information about who wrote about the ‘star system’?

Just saw the link to this series of posts, Derik, and I’m looking forward to following it. Phoenix was one of the manga series I first took an interest in, thanks to its coverage in Frederik Schodt’s Manga! Manga!, and every volume I have read (about half the series) has offered something to blow my mind, even if only in Tezuka’s stunning layouts (“only”!). You may well motivate me to finish the series at long last! I also like your insight about the character-based continuity moving forward even as the time slips back and forth. That will be an interesting progress to track…
