Well, I'm finally getting around to reading this book, and yes I was struck to the similarities in your essay on point of view. I hadn't heard of ocularization before your essay, and here it is again. I also like the terms "mode" and "voice." Mode includes focalization and ocularization, while voice covers the narration, or, since that is a problematic wording for visual storytelling, the process of monstration.

And I'm still enamored of the idea that comics are (is?) a "metonymic machine."

And yeah, "thinks balloon" is just weird.

Nick: Not sure if Fresnault-Deruelle came up with that idea. (Maybe I'll query the comix-scholars list and see if anyone knows.) I've got one of his books, but haven't read it yet.

This sounds like a nice book. I'm really interested in the concept of comics as metonymical. I heard the idea awhile ago (I forget where) and it always struck me as a useful way of looking at comics. So, did Fresnault-Deruelle come up with this originally?

ad nitpicking: yes, i would say the Comic Strip (singular) is used properly in here. refers to Comic Strip as discipline/form as a whole, so yes.
