I hadn't heard of ocularization before your essay, and here it is again. I also like the terms "mode" and "voice." Mode includes focalization and ocularization, while voice covers the narration, or, since that is a problematic wording for visual storytelling, the process of monstration. And I'm still enamored of the idea that comics are (is?) a "metonymic machine." And yeah, "thinks balloon" is just weird.
