Derik-
I wasn't criticizing you for poking the corpse of the FGN argument- I just have a lot of pent-up frustration in the area. It's especially difficult when there are many intelligent critics or pundits of the field who still hold tight to their particular cultural biases in the face of all evidence (i.e. Gary Groth's embarrassing intro to the otherwise awesome new TCJ site, which treats what is essentially the history of American comic fan culture as the history of comics criticism in the world, or something... if you want an afternoon of frustration, try visiting the wikipedia page "Graphic novel..." :)

I was trying to start the whole "first graphic novel" conversation. Just noting it as another one of those books.

Derik-

Thanks for the heads up on what looks to be an interesting book. The crudity of the drawing and the fluctuation of style reminds me of Red Elegy, or something of the sort. The whole "what started the graphic novel" thing is ridiculous from my perspective. I mean, in what country? Is it the format that's important? Is there some magic leap in storytelling that takes place in the presence of more pages? (I'd argue that there can be, but that ability to stretch out a story and decompress the story telling isn't dependent on format so much as page count, i.e. serialized manga etc).

Anyway, I've been enjoying the daily reviews. I should have a package for you (through page 130) in the next two weeks, so be on the lookout :)
