I missed this because I've been on vacation. I'd really like to see your findings because I am struggling as well to move beyond the smoke/ribbon/lyrics trope. I'm reworking the first three chapters of My Life in Records and I think I'll stick with these three (as well as pictorial representations of the lyrics) for the beginning of the story , but I am beginning to wonder how long illustrating music in that way will be interesting.
I'm also trying to figure out how to show lip sync-ing. Tim Gyodek suggested using a dotted line like a whisper or "thrown voice". I think I'll try to have a dotted line balloon surrounding another balloon whose tail is coming from a speaker.
I have a sketch of a guitar feed back cartoon using Neil Cohn's "loopy framing idea". Maybe I'll polish it up and put it up on my blog for you to take a look at.
Finally, I have a little sketch of a strip about learning to play the guitar that I thought of when you mentioned the Porcellino frame with "tune" near a guitarist tuning up. (Maybe you mentioned this on the oubapo listserve) I have a book about how to play rhythm guitar that shows with little arrows the direction the strum should be (up or down) for various strumming styles. (I've thought about putting those diagrams in balloons and have them coming out of the guitar sound hole. Once again, I'll try to get those up for you.
