BTW - Here is perhaps a better general description

"An award winning anime series, Mushi-Shi brings the viewer into a dreamlike world where ghostly organisms hover on the borders of perception."

Still could use some modifications perhaps but its definitely better than del rey's, in my opinion.

I so agree with what you said about del rey's description. It totally misses everything that makes Mushishi Mushishi...

I am quite new to it (and to anime in general) - I stumbled across it by accident - My two kids are anime freaks - I mean tons of anime i've never heard of - some down right silly ... But I do really like a certain version of Naruto and Bleach. Naruto - especially after I read up on its origins, what it came out of...

But MushiShi is its own - idk - just beautiful... And no, i suppose its not for everyone. As for me it has a very special place. There are times for action and there are times for 'dreaming'. I find Musishi rather soothing somehow (for lack of a better word)

I haven't read any - but so ready to get started now - obviously there's more in the comics than the video series...

I love Urushibara's artwork - the most 'common' scenes - mountains, a man, a child - express her own unique style, character, essence... while setting the mood perfectly...

I'm looking for more of her work - just art - no matter the degree of popularity...

The anime captures the mood and essence of the manga very well. The series has obviously been adapted with love and thoughfulness. BTW, Del Ray's description of Ginko's smile as sardonic completely misses the mark!

[...] Manga Series pick: Urushibara, Yuri. Mushishi v.1-6 (Del Rey) (4-6 date from 2008). My opinion may be slanted here because this is my latest reading (I read five volumes in the past weeks), but this manga series really impresses. Despite it’s regimented episodic structure (which I usually do not like), this series builds a wonderful world of Japanese villages at some indistinct time period (1700s? 1600s?) populated by invisible life forms called “mushi” which are somewhere between plant, insect, and spirit. Each story shows the mushi affecting people in different ways. Urushibara’s art is evocative, often beautifully abstract, and rougher than mainstream manga. Edit: I subsequently posted about the series here. [...]

I must have read Jog's review when it came out and missed it on the search later. I'll check that out again.

I think you can watch the anime on Hulu. I tried watching one but got bored with it. I'm not convinced it is better. I really like the art style in the manga.

Hm. You know, I read the first volume of this series, and wasn't all that impressed. It just didn't really click with me, but it sounds like I should have stuck with it. You've definitely convinced me to give it another try at some point, which I didn't think was going to happen, so congratulations. Maybe I'll try one of the later volumes and see what I think.

By the way, Jog was the first person I ever saw to review the series, and I think he's written about more than one volume (found it; here's his look at volume 3). He also said that he thinks it's possibly the only series in which he thought the anime version was better than the manga, which is also interesting.
