And so we both maintained a heavy silence which our sparse words did not infringe, as we listened to him pointing out that in detective fiction the story goes against the stream, beginning with the crime, the climax of all the dramatic events which the detective has to rediscover gradually, and that this is in many respects more natural than a narrative proceeding without a backward look, where the first day of the story is followed by the second and then by subsequent days in their calendar order, as I myself at that time had been describing my October experiences; in detective fiction the narrative gradually explores events anterior to the event with which it begins, and this, though it may disconcert some readers, is quite natural, since obviously in real life it is only after having met somebody that we take an interest in his previous actions, and only too often it is not until some disaster has struck our lives that we wake up enough to trace its origins.

    I’m not sure I totally buy the first quote–not as a general statement, at least. I’d be curious to know who Butor’s main examples are (Leo Malet? Simenon? Chandler?)

    Now, it would be interesting to see how all of these apply to Queneau’s “Pierrot Mon Ami,” which Q. described as a detective novel without a detective, without a solution to the crime, etc. And (almost) without a crime too.

    Have you read Chandler’s essays and letters, by the way? His theorization of the detective novel there is absolutely masterful, and a delight to read.

    Haven’t read the Chandler letters, I have read one of his essays: “Simple Art of Murder.”

    I’ve got to mull over the Queneau connection. I do love “Pierrot Mon Ami.” I think I’ve written about it somewhere around here.

    Oh, I see. That makes a big difference.

    In that case, may I recommend Cleanth Brooks’ article on Keats’s “Grecian Urn”? I know it may sound like a stretch, but it’s a masterful analysis of the distinction between–I forget his own terminology–direct, expository statements by an author and “dramatic” statements in which a character speaks. He addresses specifically the “Beauty is truth, truth beauty” line, which is usually taken as a direct statement of philosophical belief by Keats. Now, that may be so–but the poem says that it’s the urn telling us so. Brooks’ analysis of what difference that makes is really wonderful (or maybe I’m saying that because that’s one of my favorite poems ever, and it makes even more sense through his interpretation).
