I’m probably a little late on this, but…

For the past 2 years I’ve spent November making one comic a day, usually just a 1 pager or a 2 page spread. I’ve found it to be a really good way to produce work and to allow myself room for experimenting. It has been a productive exercise for me–which is why I keep doing it. You can check out the results here (2009) and here (2010).

Why November? At first it was because I was copying NaNoWriMo (which I did two years in a row awhile back), but I’ve also found the seasonal changes of the month to be a conductive background for my work.

Why just 1-2 pages a day? Like many artists I work a full-time job, and sometimes it can be hard to find the time or energy to work on my art. Making a 1 page comic in a day that many days in a row can be tough, but it’s also achievable if you put your mind to it. Maybe someone else would want to do 1 page of a 30 page comic each day, but I like working in the short form, since it allows me to change up what I’m doing without getting too stuck into one mode/style.

This year I thought I’d try to get some other people to join me (I know, short notice). So I’m throwing it out there. Join me. If I get any takers I’ll post links to their work here and as we go along. Maybe we can offer each other encouragement or critique…

Aw. . . what the heck. I’ll join in. Thanksgiving will be tough, but I think I can do it.

Are we posting these daily or in big chunk at the end of the month?

  2. DerikB says:

Your choice, though posting them regularly is more fun. Last year I posted daily with the comic from the day before.

  3. I’ve been following this in past years and I think I’ll join in this year! I probably won’t be able to post much at the end of the month since I’ll be away, but this would be a great challenge. I’m getting back into comics and this would certainly be a great way to get back into the habit.

  4. DerikB says:

Welcome aboard, Michelle. I’ll add you to the list.

  5. Wesley says:

I’m going to try this as well. My work has been slow and rather poor lately and it might be a good way to get back on track. My first one won’t go up until tonight.

  6. DerikB says:

Welcome aboard to you also, Wesley.

  7. Grant says:

I’m not totally comfortable posting these on my website as they get finished, because I’d like feedback before I consider them “finished”.

I’ll put them up on Google+ limit the posts only to participants.

If you are participating and aren’t in my circles, my profile is here:

  8. Gant Powell says:

I want to do it! Never done something like this before, but i’ve been exploring comics lately, so i’ll jump in.

  9. DerikB says:

We’ll have to dock you 1/30th of any credit since you missed day 1! ;)

If you’re on twitter we’re using #30dayscomics to track posts.
